Information for Volunteers with WASH Sailability

WASH Sailabilty values the support and loyalty of volunteers and is keen to invite anybody of 16 years and above to join us.

All volunteers will be required to have an enhanced DBS check and to read and agree to the aims and objectives; rules and regulations of the club after an induction period.

All volunteers will be members of WASH and those volunteers who wish to, will be eligible to stand for election to the Committee and/or Board of trustees of the Club, and may sail the Club boats for pleasure when they are not in use.

WASH Sailability currently has 9 Hansa dinghies — three single seater (Hansa 2.3) and   six double seater (Hansa 303). In 2017 we are going to run sailing sessions on the first and third Saturday afternoons of the month and every Tuesday, all day, from May to September, also Thursday mornings. With more volunteers we hope to increase this to other times mutually convenient to our Volunteers and our Sailors.

All sessions will be supervised by an experienced sailor but for each session we need :-

2(+) Shore Crew, 2(+) Sailing Crew, 1 Safety Boat Driver, 1 WASH Officer of the Day.

All you need is enthusiasm, full training will be given either in-house or using the RYA schemes.

The club will seek funding to pay for this training if necessary.

Can you volunteer to help on a regular or ad hoc basis?

 Shore Crew.

a) Help rig the sails on the boats.

b) Help launch and recover the boats.

c) Help sailors put on life jackets. (with the aid of their carers if necessary)

d) Help sailors into their boats from the pontoon using the hoist if necessary.

e) Wait on the pontoon to catch and tie up returning boats.

f) Make the tea and chat to carers.

g) Collect the sailing fees.

 Sailing Crew

You will sit beside the sailor in the Hansa 303 and point them in the right direction encouraging them to take control of the sails and steering as appropriate. At the end of each session you will accompany your sailor back to the club house and help them fill in their logbooks/challenge sheets etc.

 Safety Boat (RIB) Driver

You will drive one of the 2 SESCA 4m RIBs with a 30hp engine.

You will drive the RIB alongside the Hansa dinghies so the Instructor can speak to the Sailor. You may need to tow the Access dinghies alongside back to the pontoon. Hansa dinghies have water filled keels and should not capsize but MOB training and equipment is available.

Sailing Instructors / WASH Officer of the Day

Ideally you will be an RYA qualified AI, DI or SI but experienced sailors may instruct with the permission of the SI
